Woods Used

Painting wood that I carve is the last thing that I like to do. There are occasions that require painting, but I like to leave the wood the way that God created it. There may be varnish to protect the finish, but the exotic choices of wood that I like to use can generally stand on their own.

This is one of my favorite pieces that I have carved. It is a broach made for a girlfriend around 1983. It is made from Tulipwood which is hard to find these days.

Above is some of the carvings that I did for my awesome mom. I could buy her a diamond ring and she would be disappointed that I didn’t carve her something. Far left, a #1 Mom necklace made out of Teak. Next, the jumping dolphins carved from Permabucca. The Pelicans were fun and the are carved out of Teak. The far right were probably her favorites– penguin earrings and matching necklace.

Liquor Decanter Medallions

The liquor decanter medallions that I had were tarnished and nasty so I decided to make create my own that were one-of-a-kind. The “RUM” medallion is made from Wenge; “TEQUILA” is made from Padauk; “VODKA” is carved from Zebrawood and “BOURBON” from Leopardwood.

Plaques

I was asked to create plaques commemorating the education of a clients daughters. It was also requested to make it possible for them to change out the photo if they chose to. The frame has two small magnets on either side and small pieces of metal are inlayed into the base. I suggested that the client send me a handwritten note to their daughters so I could etch them on the back of the plaque.

The base of the plaque, the frame and the top layer of “OleMiss” is Padauk. The OleMiss shadow is Wenge and the letters are Maple.

The client requested that the frame be removable to be able to change the photo. It is magnetized. The plaque is 9.5″ x 13.125″

These three plaques are carved out of Padauk with inlays of maple. 9″ x 9.5″ These plaques are available for $325.

This piece was made for my dear friend, Georgia Buchanan, as a tribute to her legendary husband, Buck, who passed at the much too early age of 51. It, too, is made from Padauk with the image etched in Maple. The plaque is 12.5″ x 13.5″

I was commissioned by my friend, Willie Lanier, to carve this plaque for the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs. The base and red “KC” are Padauk; the “Clark Hunt” inlay is Zebrawood; the white arrowhead is Ash and the black shadow and arrowhead outline is Wenge. The plaque is 11.5″ x 14″

Willie Plaque

This piece was made for my good friend, Willie Lanier, to say thank you for being such a great friend for so many years. The base and red “KC” are  Padauk; the “Willie Lanier” inlay and the white arrowhead is Maple; the black shadow and arrowhead outline is Wenge. The plaque is 11.5″ x 14″

Willie also asked me to carve a plaque for Norma Hunt, the widow of Lamar Hunt. The base and red “KC” are  Padauk; the “Norma Hunt” inlay and the white arrowhead is Ash; the black shadow and arrowhead outline is Wenge. The plaque is 11.5″ x 14″

This etching (burned into the wood) was made for my best friends’ mother after Dennis passed at the MUCH too young age of 62. The piece is made out of Oak and is 6″ x 12″

In order to keep the pipe on the base, I inlayed a magnet on the bottom of the pipe and glued a piece of metal on the base.

These three clocks were made out of circular pieces of pine that are 18″ diameter.
The images are burned in by hand and colored with oil pencil.

I made this clock for my sister in 1983 with a woodburning tool and a dremel. It is made from Zebra Wood and is 24″ x 17″.

Porsche Dashboard Project

The owner of a fully restored 1971 Porsche 911E saw my TR6 and asked me if I would be interested in creating a dashboard for his Porsche. Barring a few cuts from the CNC, this project had to be done completely by hand. The dashboard, itself, was created out of Rosewood with the trim pieces carved out of Black Limba.

The knobs (Lights, Cigarette lighter and defrost) were all hand carved out of Black Limba.

In order to make sure that the knobs wouldn’t break, I needed to inlay a nut in the base of the knob.

The top row were design choices and the bottom right is the final icon created by my laser.

This is the final knob finished with Linseed Oil.

Stereo Cabinet/Speaker Stands

Below is the stereo cabinet and other pieces that I built for my Game-room.

These base and cradle for the speakers are made from Sapale. The stands are Cherry with the “U” inlay made from walnut.

The album display piece was made from Padauk with a Birch back.

I bought this record cleaning kit, but thought that it stood out on the beautiful Black Limba cabinet.
So I built this box out of the Black Limba so it would match the cabinet.

Turntable Project

I bought this Thorens TD165 turntable from a friend in New Orleans for $50 in 1982. I told her that it was worth much more, but it was in need of major repair. The decorative aluminum plate was bent and tarnished and it needed a new tonearm and cartridge.

Recently, having retired, I found the time to REALLY make this awesome turntable a unique piece of art.

This project took about 30 hours of work not including locating the wood that was needed to do the project.

The coverplate is an Elm Burl vaneer, the speed knob and the dust cover stop pieces are made from Elm Burl. The lettering is cut from Maple. The base is made from Wenge.

Jazz Fest Lamp

This lamp was carved to commemorate one of my favorite events – The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

It is carved out of a Cypress Knee with a Mahogany base. The carving was done using only a pocket knife and old dental tools that my mother had gotten from her dentist.

Killer Whale Carving

This Killer Whale is carved from Tupalo Gum and is approximetely 7″ wide. The stand is Birdseye Maple and the base is Oak. It is painted with oil paint. Click on the photo for a 360° view of the carving.
